Sharks’ first-round draft pick requests trade from OHL team, per report

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks prospect Quentin Musty has requested a trade from the Ontario Hockey League’s Sudbury Wolves, according to a report.

Musty, who was selected 26th overall by the Sharks in 2023, has been at his home in Hamburg, N.Y., since Tuesday, awaiting a deal, according to former Sportsnet host Jeff Marek. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Musty attended Sharks training camp last month but was returned to Sudbury on Sept. 30.

It was not immediately clear why Musty requested a trade. A message left with his representative was not immediately returned.

Musty, 19, is entering his fourth year in the OHL, having spent the past three with the Wolves. Last season in Sudbury, Musty had 102 points in 53 regular season games and 10 points in eight playoff games.

Musty played in two preseason games with the Sharks last month but did not have a point. The Sharks felt at the time that Musty needed to continue to work on the details of his game.

“As a young kid, he’s just learning the pro game, the style, the speed, the pace, the details, the habits that you need to have to play at this level, and (those details are) not there yet,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said last week of Musty. “He did some good things in camp. He did some good things going back to the development camp. We just thought he probably couldn’t get over that next hurdle.

“This is the best thing for his development to go back and play in the OHL, do really well, put up some points. He’s got a list of things he needs to work on.”

Sudbury has already played four games this season and is 3-1. The Wolves’ most recent game was Saturday, a 2-1 loss to the Barrie Colts.
