The shooting was reported just before 7 p.m. at the Hollister Migrant Housing Center, located at 3239 Southside Road, according to the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived to find a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

The man received medical care but was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The coroner’s office will release his identity after it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

Residents displaced by a recent apartment fire were staying at the housing center at the time of the shooting. None of them were injured, according to the sheriff’s office.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are under investigation, authorities said. The sheriff’s office did not announce any arrests or identify any suspects Wednesday.

Additional details about the shooting were not immediately available.

The 67-unit housing center is typically open from May to November and provides subsidized housing to migrant agricultural working families, according to its website.
