The 49ers are bringing two new players onto the practice squad — one of whom was partially responsible for helping the red and gold get to last year’s Super Bowl.
San Francisco announced on Tuesday afternoon it has signed safety Adrian Amos and kicker Anders Carlson to the practice squad. To make room on the practice squad, the 49ers have released wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr.

In last year’s divisional round, Carlson, then a member of the Packers, missed a 41-yard field goal that would’ve given Green Bay a seven-point lead over San Francisco. On the following drive, the 49ers scored a go-ahead touchdown and went on to beat the Packers, 24-21.
Now, Carlson could now find himself kicking field goals for San Francisco. Kicker Matthew Wright, signed by the 49ers on Oct. 8 to replace the injured Jake Moody, could potentially miss Sunday’s game against the Chiefs. His status is up in the air due to a shoulder injury.
Last season, Carlson, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, made 27-of-33 field goals and 34-of-39 extra points during the regular season as a rookie. Among qualified kickers, the 26-year-old ranked 24th in field goal percentage (81.8%) and 25th out of 25 in extra-point percentage (87.2%).
Amos, 31, joins the 49ers days after the team placed safety Talanoa Hufanga on injured reserve due to torn wrist ligaments. A fifth-round pick by the Bears in 2015, Amos has played in 142 games (125 starts) over nine seasons in the NFL, having spent time with the Bears (2015-18), Packers (2019-22), Jets (2023) and Texans (2023).
