Tanker crash spills fuel, closes stretch of westbound I-80 near Richmond

RICHMOND — Authorities closed down a stretch of Interstate 80 around midday Tuesday when a big-rig tanker spilled fuel in the aftermath of a crash, the California Highway Patrol said.

The collision happened in the westbound direction at the McBryde Avenue exit, according to the CHP. Initial reports confirmed by the agency said the tanker with fuel hit a concrete wall, causing the spill.

The wreck happened about 11:30 a.m.

An advisory from the city of Richmond said all the lanes on westbound I-80 were closed between the San Pablo Dam Road exit and McBryde Avenue. The city said the lanes were expected to be closed past 3 p.m.

Hazardous-materials teams were dispatched to the scene.
