Raymond Kopecky, a resident of the community of Mount Baldy, started his hike along the 11-mile Sugarloaf Peak trail on Sunday morning, said San Bernardino County sheriff’s spokesperson Gloria Huerta. Kopecky spoke to a friend by phone while on the trail around 1:30 p.m., and was reported missing after he was overdue to return from his hike.

The sheriff department’s West Valley search and rescue team located Kopecky’s body off the trail. He had apparently fallen at least 100 feet off a steep ridge.

Rescue crews remained with the body overnight to protect it from wildlife until morning, when it was safer for the helicopter to airlift the body, Huerta said.
