East Bay woman, 67, is pistol-whipped, robbed in Oakland

OAKLAND — A 67-year-old Moraga woman who came to Oakland to visit a relative was viciously pistol-whipped and robbed Thursday evening near Lake Merritt, authorities said.

The woman was reported to be in stable condition at a hospital after the attack.

The violent robbery happened about 6:10 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Foothill Boulevard.

Authorities said the woman was in Oakland to visit a relative but stopped to take some pictures of the lake.

When she returned to her parked car, she opened the trunk to remove some items and was confronted by a man with a gun, police said.

As the woman held a tote bag, the robber tried grabbing it from her, causing her to resist; she began screaming for help, authorities said.

The robber struck the woman across her head more than a half-dozen times before pushing her to the pavement and running off with the tote and another bag containing groceries, cash, credit cards, earbuds and other items, authorities said.

The robber got into a black car driven by another man that was last seen going westbound on Foothill Boulevard.

The robber was described as Black, aged 30 to 40 years old, standing about 5 foot 6 and weighing 130 pounds, wearing an unknown color baseball cap and dark clothing.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
