High school boys basketball rankings Jan. 23, 2024: Bay Area News Group Top 20

Archbishop Riordan and Ygnacio Valley — yes, YV — were the big movers in the latest Bay Area News Group boys basketball rankings.

Riordan moved into the Top 5, YV soared into the Top 10.

Coming off an MLK Classic loss to No. 1 Salesian at De La Salle, Riordan did what good teams do. The San Francisco school bounced back the next night to win in overtime at then-No. 4 Archbishop Mitty, prevailed at home against Bellarmine and then won a Crush in the Valley showcase game on Saturday night against Southern California powerhouse Centennial-Corona.

Riordan and Mitty traded spots in this week’s rankings. Riordan is now fourth, Mitty sixth.

Ygnacio Valley also had a superb week, winning four games in dominating fashion, including one over then-No. 14 Clayton Valley Charter. YV beat El Cerrito, Concord, Clayton Valley and Northgate by an average of 32.8 points.

The Wolves jumped from 19th to 10th in this week’s Top 20.

The new week begins with two Top 10 showdowns on Tuesday night — No. 3 Granada at No. 2 De La Salle and No. 8 Dublin playing host to No. 5 San Ramon Valley.
