A man fatally shot a woman before turning the gun on himself Monday in a house north of Brentwood, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.
The apparent murder-suicide happened on the 200 block of East Sims Road, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies were first called to the house at about 3 p.m. Monday for a welfare check. When they arrived, however, they found a man holed up inside the bedroom who — while speaking through a door — said he had several guns and had fatally shot a woman in the room, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities tried to negotiate with the man, and later heard a gunshot come from inside the room. When deputies forced their way in, they found the woman’s body, along with a man suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The names of the man and woman have not been released.
