Miller was staying in the Lake Tahoe area on a work visa at the time of the shooting, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident.

The officer, who has not been identified, tried to stop a vehicle that was wanted in connection with a carjacking in Tahoe City around 10 a.m. Friday, State Parks said in a statement following the shooting.

The driver did not yield and the officer pursued him until he crashed near the Olympic Village Inn. Authorities said a person exited the vehicle with a knife and “an officer-involved shooting took place.”

The shooting happened just as California Highway Patrol officers arrived at the scene to help. Officers provided medical aid to the person, but he died of his injuries.

The sheriff’s office said it will continue to release additional information as the investigation continues.
