Concord restaurant news: Try an Afghan burger, kabab or pulau at Kunduz Kabab

Concord’s new Kunduz Kabab restaurant opened recently on Clayton Road, offering traditional dishes from Afghanistan and Central Asia, says owner Amanullah Makhdomi.

You’ll find marinated lamb tikka kebabs ($17) served with naan, as well as two pulau dishes including qabili pulau ($17) made with brown basmati rice, carrots, raisins and marinated lamb, and a muling pulau ($21) served with lamb or beef shank. Kunduz Kabab’s Afghan burger ($8) includes onion, tomato and chutney, all wrapped in a flat tandoor bread and served with fries.

Makhdomi, who made kebabs at a Mediterranean market here before opening the restaurant, moved from Afghanistan about six years ago and found a community in Contra Costa County, a county whose high concentration of Afghan immigrants ranks fourth nationwide.

“The reason that I opened the restaurant here is that we don’t have our traditional food in the Bay Area,” he says.

Details: Open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday at 3399 Clayton Road in Concord.
