3 arrested on suspicion of murder in California man’s fentanyl overdose

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died of a fentanyl overdose in Riverside, police announced Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Riverside residents Jaclyn Sherman, 30, and Miguel Garcia, 37, were arrested in Riverside on Friday, Jan. 26; and David Ray Mullins, 46, Jurupa Valley, who was already in custody, was arrested Jan. 9 in the November death of Christopher Lucia, a 35-year-old man from Riverside, a police statement said.

Officers investigating Lucia’s death eventually served search warrants in the 5500 block of Inner Circle Drive, the 4900 block of Gardena Drive in Riverside and the 7200 block of Font Avenue in Jurupa Valley, the statement said.

Authorities seized more than 3/4 pounds of powdered fentanyl and 11 firearms during the searches, police said.

Sherman and Garcia were being held on $1 million bail. Sherman was also charged with possession of illegal narcotics for sale, police said. Mullins was also arrested on suspicion of narcotics and weapons violations.

A fourth person identified during the investigation was arrested on suspicion of possession of fentanyl.

Police said Sherman and Garcia are suspected of supplying the fentanyl that killed Lucia while Mullins is suspected of supplying the drug to those two suspects.

“The death toll from fentanyl overdoses in Riverside County continues to rise and put all our community members at risk,” Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez said in a news release announcing the arrests.
