San Jose: 59-year-old man dies after being found unresponsive in his jail cell

SAN JOSE — A 59-year-old man died at a local hospital after sheriff’s deputies found him unresponsive in his cell at Main Jail on Sunday morning, officials said.

Around 10:28 a.m., deputies with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office discovered the man unresponsive and performed CPR until medical personnel arrived. The San Jose Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the jail at 10:42 a.m. and transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:24 a.m.

The man was alone in the cell at the time of the incident and a preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play, deputies said. The sheriff’s office did not identify the man, but said he was booked into jail on Jan. 6 for a violation of his post release community supervision by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

A further investigation will be conducted by the sheriff’s office, the district attorney’s office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office.
