Oakland man was killed after gunman drove to collision scene, police say

OAKLAND — Police have identified a man who was shot and killed after a motorcycle collided with his vehicle, prompting a gunman to pull up and open fire from another car.

Meron Haileab Bahta, 31, of Oakland, was shot during the Jan. 8 confrontation and died later that evening at a hospital. Police say Bahta was shot around 7 p.m., after a collision on the 1900 block of 18th Avenue, near San Antonio Park in Oakland.

Bahta and another man were driving through Oakland when a motorcycle collided into their vehicle. After the driver began to yell at Bahta and his friend, another vehicle pulled up, and a gunman opened fire, striking Bahta, authorities said.

Police haven’t announced any arrests, nor said if they’ve identified the driver of the motorcycle.
