The solo-vehicle collision happened just before 2 p.m. on State Route 156 west of Monterey Street, according to the California Highway Patrol. It was raining at the time.

An investigation revealed a 37-year-old Chualar man was driving a 2005 Honda Accord at 70 mph when he hit standing water in the roadway and lost control, the CHP said. The car veered off the roadway, rolled down an embankment and hit a tree.

A 25-year-old Castroville woman riding in the front passenger seat suffered major blunt-force injuries during the crash, according to the CHP. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, meanwhile, was taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas with moderate injuries.

Although the collision is still under investigation, the CHP said it suspects drugs or alcohol played a role.
